Brought Her Home in 2001. Finished Her in 2025. Now We Both Get to Retire.
Restoring my 1957 K6-W300 Dodge Power Wagon has been nothing short of a labor of love — a 24-year journey of setbacks, stubbornness, and a deep respect for what these old trucks were built to do. I brought her home in 2001 and finally finished her in 2025. Now it's time to retire and enjoy her.
When I found her, she was a shadow of her former self. The frame was bent a full eight inches down on the left, a spring had snapped clean off, and the frame mount was broken. The previous owner had torched two four-inch holes through the front fenders. The engine was in dire shape — holes in two cylinder walls — and I ended up sleeving three of them just to bring her back to life.
She started out as a Texaco oil-field service truck on the Kern River Lease in Bakersfield, California. Her second owner, a hard-working Kern County farmer, is the one who really put her through her paces. By the time I found her, she was buried in a forgotten pile of scrap irrigation pipe, her differentials half-swallowed by wind-driven sand. It was a heartbreaking sight — but I saw a diamond in the rough.
The build tested me at every turn. Halfway through, I was burglarized and lost about 30% of the parts I'd meticulously restored. A year later I spotted some of them on eBay, which led to the thief's arrest and a 10-year sentence. I only recovered a third of what was taken — the rest had already been sold off — but I pressed on.
I moved her to Long Beach and kept working in an 18x20 courtyard behind the house. Tight quarters, but it became a workshop of dreams. I stripped the body down and dove into the metalwork, welding patches into 79 holes across the bed panels and fixing those butchered front fenders. I was proud of where I got it — felt like 85% perfection before I hauled it to the body shop, where the guy took one look, laughed, and called it "60% at best." Maybe he was right. The work was worth every hour regardless.
The sheet metal had been mounted on a donor frame for the bodywork. When it came back from the shop, I rigged up a lift and transferred the cab onto the original frame, where the freshly rebuilt driveline was waiting for it.
The heart of this restoration is in the mechanicals, and that's where I poured my soul. There isn't a nut, bolt, or system on this truck — save for the long block — that I haven't pulled apart, cleaned, and brought back to factory spec or better. I rebuilt the transfer case, transmission, and differentials, and swapped the ring and pinion for 4.89 gears. A complete overhaul. I also worked in the upgrades that make her livable to drive: power steering, disc brakes, an electric fan, and a brand-new Painless wiring harness — new life in an old warrior.
We're retiring to Humboldt County in the redwoods, near Arcata and Trinidad, and this truck is not destined to be a garage queen. She'll live out her days doing exactly what she was built for. I plan to drive her daily — trailering the boat down for salmon, halibut, and crab, and putting her to work on our small hobby farm hauling wood, soil, and rock. She'll earn her dents, dings, and scrapes, and she'll wear every one of them as a badge of honor.
This Power Wagon is more than a restoration. She's a testament to resilience, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of a machine built to last.
